Vigo Royal Yacht Club was founded in 1906 and was established in order to bring together all the water sports activities in the city. Between 1926 and 1929 the Club’s offices were in a large three-masted yacht weighing 800 tonnes, called the Aklosofic, now anchored at the new pier. The most important sports events were rowing, sailing and swimming.
The new building was officially opened in 1945. It is situated right beside the sea and in the city centre, surrounded by open spaces and gardens. This is an ideal place for strolling or sitting at the street cafes nearby. As time passed, the activity of the Club increased immensely, and in 1967 an indoor heated swimming pool was opened. It was the first in Galicia and encouraged sports such as swimming and water polo at the Club. In 1987 the facilities were improved and extended to a total area of 60,000m2.
Competitions are organized each year on a national and international level and members participate in World Championships and International Regattas of the highest standing. Vigo Royal Yacht Club has been awarded prizes as the best club in Galicia by the Regional Government in sports like sailing, swimming and others such as: jet skiing, rowing, water polo, etc. There are currently 9,000 members in the club.
