This monument is a tribute to the Galician emigrants who left the port of Vigo to sail to Latin America. It is the work of Silverio Rivas. It is composed of three complementary parts which were cut from the same block of granite. The main part is an arch or gateway in the middle of a fountain at Plaza de América, the second is located at the beginning of the avenue Gran Vía and the last part is at the beginning of the avenue Castelao.
The three pieces were designed, cut and sculpted from quarried granite from the nearby town of Porriño. The gateway, the main part, weighs 427 tonnes.
