This work is by the sculptor Sebastián Ucete and is located in the Collegiate Church of Santa María. This important symbol of Vigo is believed to have played its part in the victory over the Napoleonic troops that invaded Vigo in 1809. Because of this it was named patron of the city.
It is also known as Cristo de la Sal (The Christ of Salt) because it was rescued from the sea off the Cíes Islands by a merchant that was carrying salt. It had been thrown into the sea to stop it from falling into the hands of the English buccaneers. The Cristo de la Victoria was donated to the city by a Catalonian businessman, Marcó del Pont, who settled in Vigo during the second half of 18th century.
