Monument to Curros Enríquez

This work was sculpted by Lorenzo Coullat Valera and unveiled in 1911. Curros Enríquez was a journalist and writer born in Celanova (Ourense Province) in 1851. Among his work was a poem dedicated to Vigo which was published in 1877 which goes: "if I should meet misfortune, under the sun of the Empire, Oh, Vigo be loyal to me! Lend me a hut on your beach or a hole in your graveyard" ("si mi desventura es tal, / de tu sol bajo el imperio, / ah! Vigo préstame leal/ una choza en tu arenal / o un hoyo en tu cementerio.")

This bust of the writer is set on an elaborate trapezoidal base set in turn on a pedestal in a series of steps. At the front we can see the carved figure of a Galician muse of poetry.
