Monument to Méndez Núñez
This monument is located in Plaza de Compostela and is dedicated to Admiral Méndez Núñez who was born in Vigo in 1824.
The pedestal was designed by Jenaro de la Fuente Domínguez and the sculpture is by Agustín Querol. The figure of the general is in a graceful commanding stance with binoculars and a sabre in one hand and the other held out. His famous quote that it was better to "have honour without ships than ships without honour" ("más vale honra sin buques que buques sin honra") is inscribed on a bronze parchment on the pedestal. It was unveiled on 22 August 1892.
