Roman Times

In Vigo, known at this time as Vicus Spacorum, the process of Romanization began early. Archaeological findings show that there was busy port and trade activity along the coast from the second century B. C. to 100 A. D., when the Pax Romana was established.

Evidence of this process is still to be seen from findings at various points along the coast: villages (Alcabre, Toralla) and so on. There are remains of docks, streets, salt works and salting factories, cemeteries, and underwater remains. Intense Romanization can also be seen in the castro settlements throughout the area.

Recent excavations at Areal Street and in the Old Quarter suggest that a significant settlement may have existed in the romanized city of Vicus between the third and sixth centuries A. D.
