Vigozoo is the only zoo in Galicia. It covers an area of is 55,676m² and it is located at Monte de A Madroa, 300m above sea level and about 10km from the city centre.
It was set up as a Public Foundation and was approved by Vigo City Council on February 26 1970, under Mayor Rafael Portanet. It was built by his successor Antonio Ramilo Fernández-Areal.
It was officially opened on 18 July 1971. The council changed its name on 23 February 1990 from Public Foundation for Madroa City Zoological Gardens to the current Vigo City Zoo, which is an independent organization.
Vigozoo has the following facilities:
- BIRDLIFE AND MAMMALS: a wide variety of interesting animal species from all over the world - Africa, Europe, America and Oceania.

EXOTARIUM: in the multiuse building. It is a large exhibition area with more than 50 insect species, arachnids, amphibians and reptiles, shown in a natural environment. Bird species are exhibited in the aviary all year round and there is an exhibition of butterflies during the summer months only when conditions are suitable.
- CONFERENCE HALL: in the multiuse building. It can seat up to 81 visitors and has all the necessary audiovisual equipment to show films to the public on various subjects.
- PLANETARIUM AND ASTRONOMY EXHIBITION: the planetarium is located in the central building. It can hold up to 24 people and the spherical projector can show more than 2,500 stars. There is also a permanent interactive exhibition surrounding the dome.
- TEMPORARY EXHIBITION ROOM: above the cafe, it holds various temporary exhibitions on nature and the environment.
- CAFE AND GIFT SHOP: near the entrance.
Activities: all year round different activities are organized at Vigozoo for both children and adults. These include: guided tours for organized groups; interpretive talks; special programs for children such as A Day at the Zoo, "Touch It!. There is a camp at the zoo too, offering a leisure alternative for children, while also providing environmental education.
