O Castro Hill Walk

This is one of the biggest urban parks in Vigo. Lots of paths surround it and along them we can see wonderful views of the bay and different parts of the city. At the top of the hill there is a fortress from the 18th century with beautiful gardens and sculptures. This is the best place to see the views of the whole bay or ría. The O Castro Park also includes children’s playgrounds, a restaurant, cafes, and a bicycle lane and so on. The slopes of the hill are covered in different types of trees such as Indian chestnut, poplars, camellias and acacias – there are up to 30 different species in all. The park is an ideal place for strolling on unpaved paths.

Along the way we may come across the Monument of the Anchors (Las Anclas). It is made up of three anchors and cannons recovered from the Spanish galleons sunk during the Battle of Rande, in 1702. Also of interest on this side of the hill is a group of stone castro dwellings built by the first settlers in Vigo, which date from two centuries B. C.
