Monasterio de la Visitación (Monastery of the Visitation)

The regionalist style of the Salesian nuns

The Monasterio de la Visitación (Monastery of the Visitation) of the Salesian nuns is a mandatory visit for lovers of religious architecture in Vigo. The city has always had a soft spot for architect Antonio Palacios, who gave Vigo some of his most beautiful constructions. The Monastery of the Visitation, built in 1942 in Teis, one of Vigo’s traditional neighbourhoods, is an example of Palacios’s work. Traditional Galician building systems were used to construct this regionalist style building with a certain medieval flair, making it an invaluable part of our religious heritage.

It was built with granite, the local material par excellence, and the stones used on its facade were just out of the quarry, unpolished, giving it the distinctive and characteristic rustic feel of this monastery, where the work of the stonemasons is only noticeable in the openings.

Tips and recommendations:

Teis is well worth a long visit; the neighbourhood has many things to offer, starting with this monastery and hermitage on A Guía Mountain, by the edge of the sea.
