Vigo’s motor industry

The motor industry plays an important role in Vigo

Vigo is the birthplace of the Galician motor industry. Many of the cars that run the streets around the world were made here. In 1958, PSA Peugeot Citroën installed its first Spanish automobile factory in the city. In half a century, French universities began to study 'the Vigo case' or how not to settle for having one of the major automobile factories in Spain and how to create an entire motor industry cluster. This business network, the only one like it in Europe, means that all auxiliary car parts are manufactured within 35 miles of the Citroën factory in Vigo. The Vigo Free Zone, one of the few in the country, was the result of the city’s work and export volume. Furthermore, the Citroën factory in Vigo, along with the Inditex Group (Zara), is one of the top Galician companies regarding turnover and job creation.

Today, more than 90 Galician companies are part of the automobile industry cluster in Galicia, and most are based in Vigo or its surrounding areas

Tips and recommendations:

The PSA Peugeot Citroën factory is located in the Balaídos area, which has several urban parks. Despite its industrial feel, it also has lovely spaces like the Lagares River Trail.
