On the evening of the 5th January, at 5pm., the Cabalgata de Reyes (lit. The Twelfth Night Procession) takes place in and around the main streets of Vigo. It is a great show for the children, who love to get involved in the fun of happily trying to catch the magic sweets that are thrown out at the crowds from the floats.
It is said that the Three Wise Men travelled to Bethlehem following a star, to present the baby Jesus with gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. And today this is why we also give each other gifts at this time.
Feel the magic of the Wise Men and go out and discover Vigo’s craft shops and markets. Choose gifts from a whole selection of original and unique handmade products (shhhhhh... and also cheap!).
If you are looking for something a little more sophisticated Vigo has numerous shopping centres and specialist top brand shops. There is no excuse to leave empty-handed!
On the 6th January the typical round cake celebrating the Three Wise Men, the “roscón de Reyes” can be seen in all Vigo households. Did you know that this dessert symbolizes the royal crown, and its fruit represents the gem stones? Inside the cake there is a bean and a little figure.
And as the tradition states, “Find the figure and you are King for a day, find the bean and for the cake you pay".
